DeadNarlwhal’s Fallout 3 Mod List

Ok I have actually stepped backwards in my gaming adventures and have had a wicked awesome experience playing Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. I have to say right off the bat that Fallout New Vegas is far superior. It has a couple of guys who helped make the original two fallout games in the 90’s and has that old Fallout feel to it.  If you ever played and loved the original fallouts you’ll most likely like New Vegas (FONV).

I want you all to know that there are some instructional videos that can be watched that have made a significant difference in how I go about modding my games. Gopher has written a few mods himself that I use and are extremely useful. He also goes through step by step instructing on how to install them, load order and how to make the game run smoother. I would recommend his videos to everyone, whether you are new or an old hand with modding.

FWE – FO3 Wanderers Edition for Fallout 3:

In his videos Gopher will help you install this very mod. This is not just one mod but a series of best of mods. If, like me, you played the crap out of Fallout 3 and it has nothing new to offer this addition will change the very fabric of the game. The quests and dialogue are the same but the gameplay is nothing like your used too. This will make it more challenging and has definitely made it hard. There is no longer the whole “I am god of the wasteland” feeling. You will die a lot and you will die often. Finally FO3 is the game I always wanted it to be. The best part is it’s menu driven. You don’t like the way sneak works, change it. Fast travel always made no sense to you? Well now you can change that aspect. Want a hotkey for grenades rather than equipping them? Here you go… There are so many changes I could write a 20 page essay on it alone so here is a web site to tell you instead, but be mindful of what you read as some of the changes are not meant for you to know.

I’d recommend using Gophers videos even if you have modded before.  There are also a few mods that are recommended by the creators of FWE like Project Beauty, Weapon Mod Kits, Mart’s Mutant Mod, and EVE. All four of these mods are worked into FWE in such a way that they were meant to be used together, the creators of FWE made it that way. I use all these mods and a few more (including Gophers utility mods) and have had a blast playing a completely new game from what I played on my Xbox 360. It plays more like an FPS with a way heavier emphasis on role play, which in my opinion is how Fall Out 3 should have been. Here is what the guys at FWE say about the FO3 Wanderers Edition for Fallout 3:

“Fallout 3 Wanderers Edition (FWE) is a major overhaul mod for Fallout 3 that changes underlying game mechanics and adds new features to the game. The aim of the mod is to improve the challenge, sense of immersion, depth of gameplay, and range of options compared the vanilla game. You’ll find the wasteland to be a more dynamic but far less forgiving place.”

FONV – Fallout: New Vegas Project Nevada

I also started playing Fallout New Vegas with “Project Nevada” made by the same team that made FWE. Again I followed Gophers videos for an easy experience getting the basic mods running. I ended up turning off a few mods he recommends as it did hit my performance hard and had the game crashing every time I logged off. I’m sure I could have fixed it but I am lazy and would rather not play the game with ENB(some type of lighting effect) mods anyway. This mod also works in conjunction with some others that are similar to the FO3 mods, but they are handled differently in game.

In the vanilla version of FONV we get implants to enhance our character. Not unlike the implants in Fallout 2 that you get in San Francisco. What Project Nevada does is cut that aspect out and overhauled it to have cybernetics instead. Of course there are pro’s and con’s to either. But what happens is you get a more realistic effect (as realistic as cyborgs are I guess) and actually get to switch cybernetic implants rather than the implant being permanent. They also went and made some perks that enhance the amount of implants you can have. Here is a list of all the cyborg implants, what they do and where they are found.
Now the creators of Project Nevada (PN) went all out and really did something special but there are certainly some other mods you may or may want. Again some of these mods are worked into PN and some aren’t.

This list is exactly what I am using right now for Fallout 3:

The Fallout: New Vegas List will be posted soon.
